FDM and SLA solve different problems. FDM builds tough parts quickly from melted filament, while SLA cures liquid resin layer by layer to capture fine detail and a smooth surface. Choosing well starts with what the part is for.

Where SLA pulls ahead

SLA shines when detail and finish are the priority. Crisp text, fine textures, thin walls and intricate geometry all come out cleaner than FDM can usually manage, with almost no visible layer lines.

That makes it the natural choice for miniatures, jewellery patterns, dental and medical models and high-end presentation prototypes.

Where FDM still wins

For large, tough or load-bearing parts, FDM is usually the better and more economical option. It handles bigger sizes, a wider range of engineering materials and rougher service conditions.
