Common Applications
What is FDM 3D Printing?
Fused Deposition Modelling, often called FDM, builds parts layer by layer from a continuous filament of melted thermoplastic. A heated nozzle extrudes the material along a precise path, fusing each new layer to the one below until the full part is formed. It is the most widely used 3D printing process because it is robust, cost effective and works with a huge range of engineering and standard plastics. The strengths of FDM are scale, material choice and durability. With our large-format machines we can produce parts up to a full cubic metre in a single piece, choose from more than 40 filament grades, and tune infill and wall thickness to balance strength against weight and cost. That makes FDM ideal for functional prototypes, jigs and fixtures, enclosures, architectural models and short production runs. It is worth understanding the practical considerations too. FDM parts show visible layer lines unless finished, and unsupported overhangs need support structures that are removed afterwards. Parts are slightly stronger along the layer plane than across it, so orientation matters. We account for all of this when we prepare your file, and we are happy to advise on whether FDM or another process such as SLA or SLS is the best fit for your part.
