FDM parts are not equally strong in every direction. Because they are built from stacked layers, they tend to be weaker across those layers than along them. That makes print orientation one of the most powerful and least understood tools for getting a durable part.
The grain of a printed part
Think of layer lines like the grain in timber. Load applied along the grain is handled well, while load that tries to peel the layers apart is the weak point. A hook printed flat may snap easily, while the same hook printed on its side can be far tougher.
Orientation also affects surface finish and the amount of support needed, so the best choice usually balances strength against appearance and cost.
Getting it right
When you send a part for FDM printing, let us know where the load will come from. We will orient the model so the layers run in the strongest direction for that load, then balance it against finish and support.
