There is a lingering idea that 3D printed parts are only good for show. Modern FDM, with engineering materials and sound design, tells a different story. Plenty of printed parts now go straight into service and stay there.

A functional prototype lets you hold the design, test the fit and find problems early, long before you commit to tooling. The same workflow then scales into short-run production, because the part that proved itself is the part you make.
