Machining and 3D printing are often framed as rivals, but they are really partners. CNC machining removes material from a solid block, while printing builds a part up layer by layer. Each wins in different situations.

When machining is the answer

CNC suits parts that need tight tolerances, a fine surface finish or a material that cannot be printed, such as certain metals and engineering plastics. It also makes sense for simple shapes in materials where a solid, homogeneous part is important.

Because the part is cut from solid stock, it has no layers and no grain direction to worry about.

When printing wins

Complex internal geometry, organic shapes and one-off prototypes often print faster and cheaper than they machine. Printing also avoids the material waste of cutting away a solid block.
