Where the Moai are carved from volcanic stone, the Tall Dude is built one thin layer at a time, and it shows. Look closely and you will see it: hundreds of fine vertical ridges wrap the entire piece, from the rounded head down through the narrow neck to the flared, trumpet-like base. A subtle brow, a soft nose and two closed, meditative eyes emerge from the ribbing rather than being carved into it, giving the face a quiet, watchful expression that works from every angle.
