It does not use a single support: the spiral's consistent angle keeps every loop holding itself up as the printer works its way to the top, leaving smooth curves and even gaps all the way round. Those gaps are the whole point. Slip in a warm LED tea light and the glow spills out through each opening in soft, shifting bands; swap in a larger LED puck light and the lamp lights up more evenly from base to tip. The base has a small slot cut into its edge so the puck light's cable runs out cleanly instead of getting pinched under the rim.
