Knowing the steps involved helps you plan a job and understand where the time and cost actually go. None of the stages are difficult on their own, but each one matters to the final result, and skipping any of them tends to show up later. Here is how a part travels from the scanning table to a finished print using our 3D scanning and photogrammetry and printing services together.
Capture and clean up
First we scan the object and assemble the raw views into a single, watertight mesh. This stage includes filling the small holes left where the scanner could not quite reach, removing stray points picked up from the background, and confirming that the model forms a fully closed solid rather than a surface with gaps in it.
A clean mesh at this point saves a great deal of trouble later, because 3D printers will fault on holes, flipped surfaces or non manifold edges that slip through. Spending a little extra care here is always cheaper than discovering a problem halfway through a long print, so we treat it as a non negotiable part of the job.
Prepare and choose a process
Next we decide how the copy should actually be made, because the right process depends entirely on what the part is for. Fine detail and a smooth finish suit SLA printing, tough functional parts suit FDM printing, and durable nylon components that need to survive real use suit MJF and SLS printing.
With the process chosen, we orient the model on the build, scale it if the copy needs to be larger or smaller, and set up supports so that the print captures the same detail you scanned. Good preparation here is what makes the printed part match the original closely rather than approximately.
Print, finish and check
With the file ready, the part is printed, cleaned of supports and finished to whatever level the job calls for, from a simple tidy up to a fully smoothed and painted surface. Where accuracy is critical we can scan the finished print and compare it back against the original capture to confirm that nothing has drifted.
If you want to change the part before printing rather than copy it exactly, we route the scan through CAD first so the geometry can be edited properly. Whichever path suits, the simplest way to get started is to send the object details through a quote and let us recommend the best route.
Cost, timing and what to send us
Most of the cost in a scan to print job sits in two places, the capture and clean up at the start and the finishing at the end, while the printing itself is often the quickest stage. Knowing this helps you plan, because a part you simply want copied is far cheaper than one that needs editing, smoothing and painting to a high standard. Sending clear details up front lets us quote accurately rather than with a wide guess that helps nobody.
