When a part is no longer made, scanning the original is often the fastest route to a replacement. Here is how we bring old components back.

When a critical part breaks and the manufacturer no longer makes it, the search for a replacement can bring an entire machine to a standstill. Old equipment, classic vehicles and long discontinued products all suffer from this problem, and there are almost never any drawings or digital files to fall back on. In that situation, scanning the surviving part is very often the quickest and most reliable way forward, and it puts the future supply of that part firmly back in your hands.

Our 3D scanning and photogrammetry service captures the original component, even a worn or partly broken one, and turns it into clean data we can use to manufacture a faithful replacement. Instead of waiting indefinitely for a part that may never be made again, you get a route to a working component that is fully under your own control from that point onward, ready to be remade whenever you need it.

Starting from a physical part

If you still have the old component, even in a damaged state, it holds nearly all of the information needed to recreate it. We scan it to capture the exact geometry, then carefully assess where wear, corrosion or breakage has altered the shape away from how the part would have looked when it was new and working correctly. Even a part that has come apart in several pieces can usually be captured and reassembled digitally.

That assessment really matters, because a worn part should never simply be copied as it is. Reproducing the worn shape would just bake the fault into the new part, so we restore the intended dimensions as we rebuild it, using symmetry, mating parts and engineering judgement to recover what the original geometry was meant to be. Where a feature has broken away entirely, a matching part from the other side of an assembly often tells us exactly what belongs there.

Rebuilding and remaking

The scan feeds a clean CAD model where we correct the wear, tidy up the geometry and confirm that the part will fit its neighbours properly. With a sound model in hand, the replacement can be produced in whatever way best suits the application and the loads it has to carry in service, and the same file can be reused for every future order without starting again.

A tough printed part is often perfect, and durable nylon components frequently suit MJF & SLS printing for functional replacements. When the part must be metal or held to fine tolerances, CNC machining takes over instead, and we will recommend whichever route gives the most dependable result for your situation. Improving the part while you remake it

Recreating a part is also a chance to fix the weakness that caused it to fail in the first place. Once the component lives as an editable model, we can thicken a section that always cracked, add a fillet to a sharp internal corner, or change the material to something better suited to heat, wear or load. The replacement can be genuinely better than the original rather than a like for like copy of a flawed design.

These improvements are optional and entirely up to you, since some parts must match an existing assembly exactly while others have room to be upgraded. We talk through the trade offs before committing, then build the chosen version into the model. Either way you finish with a documented design that can head into prototype development for testing before a full production run is committed to.
