One of the reasons MJF is so popular for consumer facing products is its finish. Parts emerge with a fine, uniform, grainy surface and no visible layer lines, and they take a deep black dye beautifully. That combination gives a genuinely professional look without a great deal of hand finishing, which keeps both cost and lead time down on every order.

The raw MJF surface
Straight off the machine, MJF parts are a slightly speckled grey with a matte, sandy texture that is consistent everywhere. The surface is even across the whole part, including curves and internal features, which is something machined or filament parts very rarely match without extra work and careful sanding.
For many functional parts this raw finish is perfectly acceptable and needs no further treatment at all, which keeps the cost low and the turnaround fast. It is only when appearance matters, or when a softer feel is wanted, that the extra finishing steps start to earn their place in the budget. The texture also hides minor handling marks well, which is handy for tools and fixtures that get knocked about on the bench, since small scuffs simply blend into the existing finish rather than standing out.
How black dyeing works
To improve the appearance, parts are bathed in a heated dye that penetrates the porous nylon surface rather than sitting on top. Because the colour soaks in like a stain rather than coating the part like paint, it does not chip or flake with handling, and it gives a rich, even black across the entire surface that wears well.
Dyeing is uniform even on complex shapes and internal channels, which is a real advantage over spray painting, where shadowed areas and recesses can easily be missed. The result is consistent colour everywhere, inside and out, with no thin spots to give the part away as a print. Black and dark shades give the most reliable, even result on grey nylon.
Caring for dyed parts
Dyed MJF holds its colour well in normal use, but a few habits keep parts looking their best for longer. Wiping them with a soft cloth and mild soapy water clears dust without scratching, and avoiding harsh solvents protects both the colour and the surface from marking.
For parts that live outdoors or in strong sunlight, a sealing step adds a little extra protection against marking and fading over time. We can advise whether that is worth it for your application, since many indoor parts never need it at all and stay looking sharp for years. A light wipe every so often is usually all that is needed, and because the colour runs right through the surface rather than sitting on top, even a deeper scratch stays close to black instead of revealing pale nylon underneath.
Finishing options to consider
Beyond raw and dyed, a few extra steps can lift the finish further depending on the part and how it will be seen. Choosing the right combination is about matching the finish to the job rather than always reaching for the most expensive option, which simply adds cost for little gain.
