Marine Fittings: When ASA and Glass-Fibre Nylon Are the Right Call

Marine environments are uniquely punishing on polymers. Constant UV, salt spray, immersion, abrasion from rope and rigging, and mechanical impact from working a boat all conspire against any material not formulated for the job. Cheap fittings yellow, crack and fail within a season, and a failed fitting on a working vessel is rarely a small inconvenience.

Additive manufacture has a real role around the coast, including custom fittings, replacement parts for older vessels, sensor mounts and specialist hardware that no chandler stocks. The success of any marine AM project hinges almost entirely on getting the material specification right. This list covers the materials we reach for and the roles they earn on a working boat operating out of Fremantle, Hillarys, Geraldton and the rest of the WA coast.

ASA, the all weather workhorse

Default choice for almost any marine surface application. ASA holds colour and mechanical performance through years of WA coast exposure, prints reliably on most engineering machines, and accepts paint or coatings cleanly when a specific finish is required.

  • Navigation light housings and instrument bezels,

  • Trim and gap fillers around factory hardware,

  • UV pigmented variants for prolonged direct sun.

Glass fibre nylon for structure

When loads grow, PA-GF brings the toughness and dimensional stability that plain polymers cannot. Sensible sealing or a thin epoxy skim protects against the slow moisture creep that is the polymer's main weakness, and the resulting fittings carry years of working load without complaint.

Carbon and polymer composites

Where stiffness matters more than impact, carbon fibre nylons hold geometry under sun and load. PETG-CF gives a tough, budget option for non critical covers, and TPU does the soft contact work no rigid filament can match. The combination covers most fittings that sit between structural and cosmetic.

  • PA-CF for stiff sensor and instrument mounts,

  • PETG-CF for tough impact resistant covers,

  • TPU pads, gaskets and anti slip surfaces,

  • Glass fibre PETG for moderate cost structural work.

Materials to leave on the shelf

PLA, plain ABS and unfilled PETG all fail predictably in marine service. The chalky, cracked fittings on an older boat almost certainly started life in one of them, and they remain a false economy in any saltwater environment, regardless of how cheap the spool was.

  • PLA softens at deck temperatures and degrades with humidity,

  • ABS yellows and embrittles in direct UV,

  • Unfilled PETG creeps under sustained load,

  • Standard PA6 absorbs water and softens without protection.

Most marine fittings can come off the build plate in a single piece up to a 1 m envelope, which keeps both assembly time and the potential for failure points to a minimum. For one off replacement parts on older or imported vessels, supplying a photograph, a sketch or a worn original is usually enough for us to reverse engineer a printable version inside a working week.
