Visible layer lines are the most common complaint about printed parts. The good news is that they can be reduced or removed entirely with the right finishing, depending on how smooth you need the part to be.
The reliable methods
For most parts, the workhorse is filler primer and sanding. A coat of high-build primer fills the valleys between layers, and sanding it back levels the surface. A few cycles of this produces a smooth base ready for paint.
For certain materials, chemical smoothing can melt the surface very slightly to blend the lines, though it needs care to preserve detail.
