Brackets and housings are the bread and butter of functional 3D printing, and MJF handles them brilliantly. The inherent strength of PA12 nylon, combined with the freedom to print complex shapes in a single piece, makes it ideal for parts that go straight into service rather than sitting on a shelf as a model, and it does so without any tooling cost or long lead time.
We print end use brackets and enclosures every week through our MJF & SLS printing service in Perth. Customers are often surprised that a printed part can take this kind of duty, but with the right material and design it holds up just as well as many traditionally made parts, and frequently weighs less while doing so.
Why MJF suits structural parts
Because MJF parts are near isotropic, a bracket holds its load reliably no matter which way the force happens to come from, which removes the weak layer direction that catches out filament parts. There is no weak axis to design around, so the engineering is far simpler and the finished result much more dependable when it meets real loads, vibration and the occasional knock in the field.
The fine, uniform finish also means the part genuinely looks the part, which matters a great deal when a housing or cover is visible on a finished product. You get strength and appearance together, without having to trade one off against the other, and a black dye lifts a visible bracket from merely functional to genuinely professional.
Freedom to integrate features
One of the biggest advantages of printing is consolidation. Features that would otherwise need several machined or moulded pieces can often be combined into a single printed part, with mounting bosses, cable channels, ribs and clips all built directly into the one component instead of being fastened together afterwards.
That consolidation reduces assembly time, removes fasteners from the bill of materials and usually makes the part stronger overall, since there are simply fewer joints that can work loose or fail. Fewer parts also means fewer things to source, stock and track in production, which quietly lowers cost well beyond the printing itself.

Making brackets last in service
A bracket that carries load over years benefits from a few simple design habits that play to the strengths of nylon. Generous radii at corners spread stress rather than concentrating it, ribs add stiffness far more efficiently than thick solid walls, and threaded inserts give strong, reusable fixing points where bolts will be done up repeatedly.
For heavier duty mounts that must not flex, a glass-filled PA12 grade adds rigidity and heat resistance, while standard PA12 stays the better pick wherever a little give is welcome. Telling us how and where the bracket mounts lets us choose the grade and the wall sections that suit the job best. As a rough guide, walls around two to three millimetres carry most bracket loads comfortably, with ribs added wherever a flat face would otherwise flex under a heavy fitting.
