Modelling for scale models and architecture is a world away from designing a functional engineering bracket. Here the priorities are appearance, fine detail and faithful proportion rather than load paths and tolerances, and the parts themselves are often far larger or far smaller than typical engineering work, which brings its own set of challenges to solve.

Our CAD team handles both ends of that spectrum, preparing models that capture convincing detail at scale while still being genuinely practical to manufacture. The approach changes a great deal with the project, because a tabletop model of a tower and a detailed display piece demand very different decisions about what to keep and what to simplify.

Detail at small scales

When a whole building is shrunk down to fit on a table, fine features like window frames, railings, mullions and decorative trim become genuinely tiny. Pushed too far, they fall below what any manufacturing process can actually reproduce and simply vanish, or print as a fragile blob that breaks the moment the model is handled.

A big part of the skill lies in knowing what detail to keep faithfully, what to simplify cleanly and what to exaggerate just slightly so that it still reads correctly at the reduced scale. The model should always suit the chosen process, which is why SLA printing captures the crispest fine detail while larger, simpler massing models are usually better suited to other routes.

Large architectural builds

At the opposite extreme, a presentation model of a whole development can easily be far larger than any single machine build volume. The model then has to be intelligently split into sections that each print well on their own, and that then join back together cleanly with hidden seams and locating features so the finished assembly looks seamless and deliberate.

Planning those splits carefully in CAD, rather than leaving them to chance or cutting the model up at the last minute, is exactly what separates a crisp, professional model with invisible joins from one that is obviously made of several awkwardly bonded pieces. Where the seams fall, and how the sections register together, are design decisions worth making early.

Finishing for display

A display model lives or dies on its finish, so we design with painting, gluing and assembly firmly in mind rather than treating them as an afterthought. Hidden registration pins and keyed faces let sections line up the same way every time, while small flats or sockets give a clean surface for adhesive to grip, which matters far more on a model that will be handled and admired up close.

Surface preparation is part of the plan too. Parts destined for a smooth painted finish are oriented and detailed to minimise visible layer lines, and we flag where a light sand and prime will lift the result. For pieces that combine printing with timber, acrylic or metal fittings, we model the right clearances so everything goes together without forcing. The aim is a model that looks intentional and refined on the table, not one that betrays how it was made the moment someone leans in.
